Can Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis be Prevented?

By definition, something that is “idiopathic” cannot be prevented, as it naturally occurs on its own for no apparent reason. We also know that scoliosis is not caused by having poor posture, standing slumped over, carrying heavy items or even sleeping funny.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis occurs in varying degrees of curvature of the spine during growth and development. Depending on the extent of the curve, there are three treatment options available. These include:

Observation – This is simply watching those children with mild curves and teenagers who have stopped growing, but have severe curves. This observation process may last from 6 months to a year and include regular x-rays. These x-rays are compared over time to see if the curve has progressed.

Bracing is advised on children with a curve from 35 to 45 degrees. It is also used on children with mild curves, but who also show curve progression over time. The purpose of bracing is to try and prevent the curve from becoming worse until the child stops growing. The brace is worn 20-22 hours per day and is taken off for bathing and physical activities.

Surgery – The goal of surgery is to minimize and prevent any more spine deformity in children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This is reserved for those children who have severe curves that are greater than 50 degrees. This may include spinal fusion with metal rods. Essentially, the bones are fused together and held in place with metal rods. Surgery is not a requirement and is typically reserved those who are very unhappy with the appearance of the curve in their back. It is up to the patient whether or not surgery should be performed.

Children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can do everything other kids do in most cases. They can participate in sports, physical activity, exercise programs and more. In fact, it is important that these children perform regular exercise for their overall health.

Still, for cosmetic and even self-confidence issues, surgical treatments offer some relief from moderate to severe deformities.

irregularity is seen affecting the superior and inferior endplates of the L4 and L5 vertebrae with reduction in anterior height of the vertebrae.

findings are suggestive of scheuermann’s disease osteochondritis of vertebral epiphyseal plates.
