I Injured My Spine, Can Physio Help Me?

Question:

I injured my spine last June when I crashed on my butt on ceramic tile at home, I had a CT scan which showed two compression areas. I was in bed for 6 weeks rest and now wear a Bell Horn back brace.  I wish to stop using the brace but my back is weak and I bend over forward after a while.  I live on Abaco, The Bahamas, and there is no hospital or Physiotherapist here so I have to do the physiotherapy myself, preferably with a videos to guide me.

Answer:

One of the bigger issues you will have to tackle will the be lost of proper movement of each vertebra in your back.  The period of time in the brace and the level of inflammation surrounding the joints will indeed cause scaring that will reduce movement.
While regaining proper physiological movement the muscles surrounding the back (the small stabilizing muscles and the large mover muscles) can start to be strengthening.  These are specific exercises and will take some practice to get it right.  It is unfortunate that there are no professionals on your island that could help.

There are a number of different videos, etc. that can be viewed on the Internet.  We do not have anything specific at this point that I can direct you too.  I cannot advise you through a specific program as I have not assessed you and cannot be sure where you are in your recovery.  I think the most important thing for you to keep in mind is that you should be progressing yourself out of your brace as soon as you can.

Typically I think you will be fine if you look through the internet for a general range program and stability program.  If you run into any issues please contact your physician.  Again, that is tough without someone who is there to look for and correct potential issues but I think you will be fine.

Good luck!
