I hurt my ankle while playing volleyball, what do I have to do?
Question:
Today, I was playing volleyball with my friends and then a moment later just as I jumped to hit the ball, I fell down on my ankle in the wrong way. I am still feeling pain in my foot. So what should I do?
Answer:
If the pain began during a jumping motion it is likely that you just strained a tendon (structures that attach muscle to bone). As the injury is still in the acute phase (i.e. the first 72 hours or so) I would suggest cooling the area down a few times a day. A gel ice pack or even a frozen bag of peas works just great! Do not put the ice pack directly on skin. It is better to use a towel or other barriers to just cool the area as opposed to completely freeze the area.
I would do this for at least a day or two. If the ankle is still sore after that point, it might be necessary to visit a physiotherapy clinic for a proper assessment. Once they can decide what you have injured, they can guide you through the treatment program specifically designed for you.
I hope it is feeling better! If not we will see you soon!
