Referred to Physio for FAI and calcified deposits: What’s going to happen?

Question:

I have been diagnosed with FAI and calcified deposits. I have been getting pain in my groin, thigh and hip nearly everyday. I’ve been referred to physio. What’s going to happen?

Answer:

Hello,

Thank you for your question. First and foremost, your Physiotherapist is going to assess you and determine what they think is causing the pain and movement dysfunctions. While some of the pain could be caused by the calcium deposits, they are typically thought of as a symptom rather than direct diagnosis.

FAIOnce a correct diagnosis is determined, the Physiotherapist will start a treatment program that, with some palliative type care, helps reduce your discomfort. As you begin to feel better, they will do what is required to regain any loss of function (manual stretching, soft tissue mobilizations, etc.) and progress you through a home exercise program to stabilize the area in question.

At this point, I would suggest that you need to be patient and understand that your issues will not likely go away overnight. Calcification of soft tissue is usually indicative of a longer term issue that has been building over time. Therefore, it may take a little longer than a more acute injury to rectify. Find a Physiotherapist you trust and I am confident you will see positive results.

All the best,

Andy B.
