Type 2 Diabetes Peripheral Neuropathy - Can Exercise Help?

feature photo

Question:

My husband has diabetes 2, and suffers from peripheral neuropathy. Is there any thing that can help?

Answer:

Thank you for the question.  There are many factors that will determine how well your husband will cope with type 2 diabetes.  Unfortunately it would be very difficult to outline what could potentially help and not help through the Internet.  Generally speaking, diet is a major factor in the control of the disease (I assume your Doctor has been through this with you.).  Exercise can also be a very important determinant of his overall health.  If he is unsure of how to begin a safe exercise program he may benefit from a few appointments with a Physiotherapist/Kinesiologist team to ensure he is doing all he can and to minimize risk of further injury.  This becomes especially important when neuropathy’s are involved.  Further, there is much education he could benefit from to ensure there are no further complications with the neuropathy directly.

As mentioned diabetes can be somewhat complicated as there are just so many things that can very ones outcome.  I think it is important for you to find a professional in your area that has some experience with this condition and see what further can be done.  It is important for your husband to remember that type 2 is very controllable with proper education and motivation.

  1. Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage caused by chronically high blood sugar and diabetes. It leads to numbness, loss of sensation, and sometimes pain in your feet, legs, or hands. It is the most common complication of diabetes.
