Degenerative Disc Disease: 11 Ways Physio Can Help
Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a normal part of the aging process. Degenerative disc disease is a gradual deterioration of the structure and function of the “discs” between vertebrae (spine bones). These discs become thin and dehydrated, which decrease their ability to absorb shock (normal wear and tear).
In addition, with degenerative disc disease there is often a more pressure placed on the spinal (facet) joints due to narrowing of the space between the vertebrae. This narrowing can result in damage to the joints.
As the discs weaken, tears can occur and thus cause in pain. The area of the low back that are most affected by degenerative disc disease are the lower discs closer to the tail bone; namely the L4 and 5 disc, and the L5 S1 disc. Degenerative changes can lead to osteoarthritis and over the long run can also affect the nerves of the lumbar spine.
11 Ways Physio Can Help DDD:
Reduced Pain: Physiotherapy programs are designed to control and reduce pain
Increased Strength: Strengthening core stabilizers (e.g. abdominals) can help offset the effects of degenerative disc disease.
Increase Blood-flow: Why is this important? Because it helps promote circulation, which can noticeably enhance the recovery process
Increased Flexibility: Physio helps to restore lost flexibility, and range of motion of the lumbar spine.
Increase Endurance: Physio also helps bring back endurance of postural muscles often lost with degenerative disc disease.
Improved Body Alignment: Correcting abnormal alignment and mobility of the spine is another focus of physiotherapy.
Reduced Muscle Tension: Physio removes tension from the affected muscles, allowing more flexibility with less pain.
Education: Knowing what to do, and what not to do when treating degenerative disc disease is critical. Physio helps to clear the muddied water about treatment and prevention of DDD.
Proper Bracing: Physiotherapists will often recommend proper lumbar support devices when appropriate
Postural Training: Learn how to stand, sit, move, and lift using proper body mechanics that helps keep degenerative disc disease related pain at bay.
Prescription Exercises: Prescribe customized exercise program for maintaining a healthy lifestyle
