Home Tele-Rehabilitation System for Stroke Patients

A stroke can be debilitating and a patient may lose motor functions as a result. Retraining to bring back these lost capacities is often a long and rigorous process. It involves comprehensive and repetitive movements which demand the patient’s focus in order to re-establish new neurological connections.

An implementation design for an in-house, clinician directed system was presented by the joint efforts of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Program in Physical Therapy of the Minnesota in the US.

The tracking system has two independent biofeedback motion training components: the first for hand and wrist motor relearning and the other for ankle motor. Each has a smart box interface, a potentiometer joint sensor, a laptop computer, and an internet connection. The latter is needed for the scheduled video tele-conferencing between the patient and the physiotherapist.

The hand and wrist motor relearning system had been assessed in a pilot study with 24 subjects and this had demonstrated technical feasibility. Meanwhile, the ankle system is presently undergoing review.
