Osteoporosis: The Silent Thief

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent thief” because bone loss occurs without symptoms.  And since November is awareness month, we felt PT Health should do its part to help get the word out about a condition that affects so many of us.

What exactly is Osteoporosis?

osteoporosis Osteoporosis: The Silent ThiefThe definition found on www.osteoporosis.ca is: “Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture (broken bones), particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis is often known as “the silent thief” because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Osteoporosis is sometimes confused with osteoarthritis, because the names are similar. Osteoporosis is a bone disease; osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints and surrounding tissue.”

And did you know that osteoporosis affects approximately 1.4 Million Canadians?

www.osteoporosis.ca website is an excellent resource for those suffering from osteoporosis as well as people looking for more information on prevention and symptoms of this condition.   Visit their website at www.osteoporosis.ca

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association has also joined in communicating the message about how Physiotherapy fits into the picture of preventing and treating osteoporosis.

And since November is Osteoporosis Month,  the Canadian Physiotherapy Association is taking time to tell Canadians that skipping, dancing and other fun strength and balance activities can help battle the onset of osteoporosis, the “pediatric disease with geriatric consequences,” as Osteoporosis Canada describes it.
