Wireless Breathing-Training Support System Developed for Kinesitherapy

Researchers from the Department of Health Science of the Hiroshima Institute of Technology in Japan have developed a novel breathing support system for kinesitherapy. The system is wireless, employing Bluetooth technology. Aside from the Bluetooth module, the system also includes an optical sensor, an accelerator, a microcontroller, and a laptop computer.

It then measures the chest circumference, whose components are generated by breathing. The accelerator, on the other hand, determines the acceleration force produced by a physical activity such as walking and running. The role of the microcontroller is to sample this force in sequence. The data, chest circumference and acceleration force, are then transmitted to the physiotherapist’s laptop using Bluetooth. Since the data are provided to the attending physiotherapist in real time, accurate evaluation and instructions of exercise dynamics of the patient can be given. In addition, the volume of air breathed in and out of the lungs can be calculated to provide a quantitative training evaluation.

This new technology will greatly benefit patients who are undergoing kinesitherapy since it provides real time data to the physiotherapist, who can then make specific evaluations to treat the movement or exercise problems of the patient.
